How Gillingham Customers Actually Find You

How Gillingham Customers Actually Find You

Someone in Gillingham needs a plumber. They pick up their phone, type four words, and about eight seconds later they have decided who to ring.

That eight seconds is the whole game for a local business, and almost none of it happens on your website. Understanding what actually occurs in that window changes what you should spend money on.

If you are after the service rather than the article, my web design in Gillingham page covers what I build for businesses here and what it costs. What follows is the longer answer to how that eight seconds gets decided.

What the screen looks like to them

Type "plumber Gillingham" into a phone and here is what you get, in order.

A block of ads. Then a map with three businesses in it. Then the normal results, which on a phone means scrolling past everything above.

That map block absorbs a large share of the taps, and it is driven almost entirely by your Google Business Profile rather than your website. Your reviews, your categories, how complete the profile is, and how close you are to whoever is searching.

This is the part people get wrong. They spend on the website and wonder why nothing changes, when the thing taking most of the clicks is a free profile they filled in halfway three years ago.

What "near me" actually means

Google does not really care whether someone typed "near me". It knows where the phone is either way and weighs distance heavily for anything with local intent.

That has a practical consequence worth accepting rather than fighting. You will find it much easier to appear for searches happening near you than ones two towns over. Someone standing in Rainham gets a different set of results from someone in Gillingham High Street, even for identical words.

So the realistic ambition is to own your immediate area properly, then compete on content quality further out. Trying to dominate everywhere at once is how budgets get wasted.

The four things that move the needle

Your Google Business Profile, finished properly. Every category, every service, real photographs, accurate hours. Free, and the highest return hour of work available to you.

Reviews, more of them. Review volume is one of the strongest signals for that map block and the one most businesses neglect. Ask every satisfied customer, every time. Make it habit rather than a campaign.

A site that loads before they give up. Most of this traffic is on mobile data. If your number is not visible quickly, they are back on the results page choosing someone else. Speed is a ranking factor and a conversion factor at the same time.

A phone number they can tap. Sounds trivial and is not. On a phone, a number that is an image or plain text rather than a tap to call link loses you jobs daily.

Where the website earns its place

Not in the map block. The website's job starts the moment someone taps through.

At that point they are checking three things, fast. Do you actually do the thing they need. Are you real, meaning photographs of your work rather than stock images. And how do they contact you without hunting.

Get those three right and the site converts. Everything else on it is secondary.

That is the thinking behind how I build: pricing from £800, fixed and agreed in writing, with Foundation SEO free and Advanced from £300 through my SEO work. I have been doing this in Medway since 2016 and I have 157 five star reviews across Google, Facebook, Trustpilot and Wix. The portfolio shows what that looks like in practice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rank in Gillingham without a website?

For the map block, yes, up to a point, because that is driven by your Google profile. But people do click through to check you are real, and having nowhere to send them costs you.

How many reviews do I need?

More than the businesses currently above you. There is no magic number, but it is consistently one of the strongest signals and most small businesses are badly under-invested in it.

Will a new website put me in the map pack?

Not on its own. The profile and the reviews do that. The website decides whether the click turns into a call.

How far from Gillingham can I realistically rank?

For map results, a few miles. For standard organic results, further, if you have a page that genuinely deserves it.

If you would rather see what this looks like as a finished job, my web design in Gillingham page covers what I build for businesses here, and what it costs. If you want an honest view of which of the four is holding you back, get in touch or call 01634 984929.

Thinking about your own site?
